The Dog Stars

Details

Based on the acclaimed bestselling novel by Peter Heller, Ridley Scott returns to the world of science fiction with The Dog Stars, a post-apocalyptic survival thriller starring Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley.

Set in the near future, The Dog Stars follows Hig (Jacob Elordi), a young pilot struggling to survive in the aftermath of a devastating flu outbreak that has wiped out much of the world's population. Living at an abandoned airfield in Colorado, Hig has established a precarious existence alongside Bangley (Josh Brolin), a former Marine whose military experience and uncompromising approach to survival have helped keep them alive.

With civilisation in ruins, supplies increasingly scarce and other survivors posing a constant threat, the pair have learned to depend upon one another, despite their contrasting outlooks on the world around them.

However, when Hig picks up a mysterious radio transmission, he begins to question whether there might be something more beyond the isolated life he has built. Determined to discover its source, he sets out on a dangerous journey into the unknown, leaving behind the relative security of the airfield and the protection of his formidable companion.

Along the way, he encounters Pops (Guy Pearce), a wary survivor living in a remote canyon, and his daughter Cima (Margaret Qualley), whose presence offers the possibility of companionship and a renewed sense of purpose. As Hig ventures deeper into an unforgiving landscape, his search becomes about more than simply staying alive, exploring the importance of hope, trust and human connection in a world where all three have become increasingly difficult to find.

Directed and produced by Ridley Scott, whose extensive career includes Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator and The Martian, the film marks another exploration of humanity's relationship with a hostile and uncertain future.

The screenplay has been adapted by Mark L. Smith, whose previous credits include The Revenant, from Peter Heller's 2012 novel of the same name. Alongside Elordi, Brolin, Qualley and Pearce, the supporting cast includes Allison Janney and Benedict Wong.

With its combination of spectacular cinematography, an accomplished cast and a thought-provoking survival story, The Dog Stars is released on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD 7th December 2026 from Walt Disney Home Entertainment.
