One of the most celebrated action films of all time is returning to physical media this Christmas, as Die Hard arrives in a new 4K Ultra HD SteelBook edition on 7th December 2026. Starring Bruce Willis in the role that established him as a major action star, John McTiernan's 1988 classic remains essential festive viewing for generations of film fans.

Bruce Willis stars as John McClane, a New York police detective who travels to Los Angeles on Christmas Eve hoping to reconcile with his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia). Arriving at the headquarters of the Nakatomi Corporation during its Christmas celebrations, McClane finds himself caught in a carefully orchestrated takeover led by the sophisticated and ruthless Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman). With the building under siege and its occupants held hostage, McClane must rely on his instincts, determination and considerable resourcefulness to prevent a spectacular robbery disguised as a terrorist attack.

Directed by John McTiernan, Die Hard helped redefine the modern action thriller by replacing the seemingly invincible heroes of the era with a vulnerable, increasingly battered protagonist. Willis brings a combination of humour, frustration and determination to McClane, while Rickman's unforgettable performance as Hans Gruber created one of cinema's most memorable villains. The film's expertly constructed action sequences, tense confrontations and distinctive Christmas setting have ensured its enduring popularity.

The forthcoming 4K Ultra HD SteelBook offers collectors another opportunity to own the original adventure in a premium physical-media edition. Unlike the two sequels arriving alongside it, Die Hard has previously been released in 4K Ultra HD, making this December's edition a new collectible presentation rather than the film's format debut. The three SteelBooks arrive together, allowing fans to assemble a matching collection of the franchise's original trilogy.

Nearly four decades after its original theatrical release, Die Hard continues to occupy a special place in action cinema, combining memorable characters, sharp dialogue and explosive set pieces with an unexpectedly strong festive atmosphere. Whether regarded as the ultimate Christmas action movie or simply one of the finest thrillers ever made, John McClane's first adventure remains endlessly rewatchable.

Die Hard arrives on 4K Ultra HD and 4K Ultra HD SteelBook on 7th December 2026 from Walt Disney Home Entertainment.
