Master filmmaker Sidney Lumet (The Verdict, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico) is back at the top of his game with Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, an absorbing suspense thriller about a family facing the worst enemy of all - itself. Taking £500 000 at the UK box office, this classy, classic heist-gone-wrong drama in the tradition of The Killing and Lumet's own The Anderson Tapes, is a compelling film released by Entertainment In Video to rent on 5th May 2008 and to buy on retail DVD and on Blu-Ray on 26th May 2008.
A stunning cast is headed by Oscar®-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, Charlie Wilson's War, Mission: Impossible III), Ethan Hawke (Assault on Precinct 13, Before Sunset, Training Day), the legendary Albert Finney (The Bourne Ultimatum, Traffic, Erin Brockovich) and Oscar®-winner Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny, Wild Hogs).
Charles (Albert Finney) and Nanette Hanson (Rosemary Harris) raised their family well. Eldest son, Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman), loves his beautiful wife, Gina (Marisa Tomei) and makes a six figure salary in an accounting firm. Younger brother Hank (Ethan Hawke) is striving to put his beloved daughter through a top private school.
Appearances however can be deceptive. Andy has been supporting his extravagant lifestyle and expensive drug habit through embezzlement and while he loves his wife, his marriage is rocky. His company is being audited by the taxman and he's the next in line to report. Andy's life is unravelling and he's desperate. Hank too has his own money concerns. He's behind on his child support, he's drinking too much and he's having an affair... with his brother's wife.
Andy comes up with a scheme that will solve their problems - at least financially. Hank will rob the family jewellery store early in the morning when the sales clerk opens up. She'll never know who's doing the job, Mom and Dad will get the insurance money, they'll sell the jewels and everybody's happy.
Scared to go it alone, Hank hires a small time thief, Bobby, to carry out the actual job. But Bobby pulls out a gun and it's not the sales clerk that he's facing... instead its Nanette. Far from backing down, she attacks him and is mortally wounded while Bobby is left dead on the ground.
With the police not working fast enough Charles begins to investigate his wife's murder and what he discovers is unimaginable. As the family disintegrates, so the secrets pour out, pitting brother against brother, father against sons.
Greed. Guilt. Betrayal. Revenge. All culminate in a final breathtaking climax.
