Paul Thomas Anderson's feature directorial debut Hard Eight makes its way back to Blu-ray this September courtesy of 88 Films, bringing together an impressive cast headed by Philip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson.

John is broke and stranded outside Reno when he encounters Sydney, an experienced gambler who takes the younger man under his wing. After buying him a cup of coffee, Sydney offers to show John how to make enough money in the casinos to get himself back on his feet.

Two years later, John has become Sydney's protégé and the pair are comfortably making their way through the casinos. Their unusual partnership becomes more complicated, however, when John falls for Clementine, a cocktail waitress who supplements her income by working as a prostitute.

When John and Clementine find themselves in serious trouble following a badly conceived attempt to extort money from one of her customers, Sydney is once again called upon to straighten things out. But the arrival of John's friend Jimmy threatens to expose secrets from Sydney's past and reveals that the apparently calm and generous gambler may have considerably more at stake than he lets on.

Originally released in 1996 and also known as Sydney, Hard Eight marked the feature debut of writer and director Paul Thomas Anderson, who would follow it just a year later with Boogie Nights. Even at this early stage, many of the elements that would become familiar throughout Anderson's work were already present, including damaged characters, unconventional relationships and an ensemble cast of familiar faces.

Philip Baker Hall takes centre stage as the quietly enigmatic Sydney, with John C. Reilly as John, Gwyneth Paltrow as Clementine and Samuel L. Jackson as Jimmy. Philip Seymour Hoffman also makes a memorable early appearance as an obnoxiously confident young gambler who crosses paths with Sydney at the craps table.

The film grew out of Anderson's 1993 short Cigarettes & Coffee and began a number of collaborations that would continue throughout the director's subsequent films, most notably with Hall, Reilly and Hoffman.

More restrained than some of the sprawling ensemble films which would follow, Hard Eight is a slow-burning crime drama built around Sydney's relationship with the people who have unexpectedly become his surrogate family, gradually revealing that his reasons for helping John may not be quite as straightforward as they initially appear.

Hard Eight is released on Blu-ray in the UK on 28th September 2026 from 88 Films.
