Trevor Eve, Sue Johnston, Holly Aird, Claire Goose and Wil Johnson star in Waking the Dead, the Emmy award-winning crime drama in which The Cold Case Squad must reopen unsolved cases and try to find the killers, using modernised methods and skills. Series 3 of Waking the Dead is released to buy as a four-disc set on 25th September 2006 from BBC DVD.

Following major advances in forensic science, psychological profiling and technology, the chances of solving mysterious cases that have long lain dormant is better than ever. Leading The Cold Case Squad is DS Peter Boyd (Eve) who, with his team of dedicated professionals: psychological profiler Dr Grace Foley (Johnston), forensic scientist Dr Frankie Wharton (Aird) and detectives Amelia (Mel) Silver (Goose) and Spencer Jordan (Johnson), is determined to hunt down the ruthless killers and criminals of yesterday who thought they'd got away with it.

After the enormous success of series 1 and 2, Waking the Dead returned for a third series in 2003, which saw two of the stories, Multistorey and Breaking Glass win International Emmy Awards for Best Drama Series. Once again Boyd must lead his team in cracking four more challenging cases:

  • Multistorey (by Ed Whitmore) - Boyd has to battle his demons when the case against a mass murderer, who killed his close friend, is reopened
  • Walking on Water (by Stephen Davis) - Boyd isn't convinced when Mark Lovell is cleared of the murder of his adoptive father, and has to explain the disappearance of other family members
  • Breaking Glass (by Simon Mirren) - the team is faced with a highly disturbing case of murder and child abuse in a children's home and must race to find the killer before his vengeful victims reach him
  • Final Cut (by Stephen Davis) - the discovery of a mummified bodies in the walls and floors of a Notting Hill house has the team reinvestigating a 60s gangster landscape, inextricably entwined with the background history of one of the team.

In each two-part story, the regular stars are joined by a number of leading actors in guest roles including Sean Pertwee, Craig Kelly, Lorraine Pilkington, Saskia Reeves, Ian Hogg, Tom Bell and Maurice Roëves. The series was created by Barbara Machin and produced by Richard Burrell, with executive producer Alexei de Keyser. A sixth series is currently in development.
