Written and directed by Carlos Cuarón, riotous comedy Rudo & Cursi, released by Optimum Home Entertainment on 19th October 2009, is the first title from the new production house of Mexican powerhouse filmmakers Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo del Toro.
The film reunites Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna onscreen for the first time since Y Tu Mama Tambien as Beto (Luna) and Tato (Bernal) Verdusco, brothers who work on a banana plantation and play football for their village team. Nicknamed Rudo (Tough) because of his personality and football style, Beto dreams of becoming a professional football player; Tato's dream is to be a famous singer, and both share the dream of building a house for their mother, Elvira (Dolores Heredia).
Luck comes their way when "Batuta" (Guillermo Francella), a football talent scout, discovers them accidentally. Tato is the first to move to the big city where he becomes the star scorer for the prestigious Deportivo Amaranto (Amaranto Club) where his baroque playing style earns him the nickname of Cursi (Corny). At first, Beto feels betrayed by his brother until he too finds similar success as the goalkeeper for Atlético Nopaleros (Nopaleros Team) and all animosity is soon forgotten. But not for long...
