The summer holidays have just begun and 11 year old Skunk (Eloise Lawrence) fills her afternoons with day dreams and curious wanderings around her neighbourhood, until one day when she witnesses a brutal assault on her neighbour. Rick (Robert Emms) a psychologically-troubled boy has been beaten by another neighbour, Mr Oswald (Rory Kinnear), whose daughter has callously and fictitiously accused Rick of rape.
As Skunk tries to find solace in the comforts in those closest to her - her father (Tim Roth), nanny (Zana Marjanovic) and school teacher (Cillian Murphy), she is unwittingly sucked in to her neighbours unfolding melodrama involving violence, sex and life-shattering illness. Skunk's home, neighbourhood and school soon become treacherous environments where the happy certainties of childhood give way to a fear-filled doubt and the promise of a complex, broken future. Overwhelmed by her experiences, Skunk herself is drawn into an ethereal chaos from which she may only return through the intense love of those closest to her.
Based on Daniel Clay's 2009 novel Broken is a story that gets to the very heart of modern social dysfunction.
