Shock Entertainment and Fremantle Media are extremely proud to announce the UK DVD release of Prisoner Cell Block H on 10th November 2008. Available for the very first time on DVD, this must-have collectors' edition 8-disc DVD box set contains the first 32 episodes of the hugely popular cult television series. With over 25 hours of footage, this beautifully packaged collectors' DVD box set is the perfect gift this Christmas.
Based inside Australia's fictitious Wentworth Detention Centre, Prisoner Cell Block H ran for 8 years from 1979 for an incredible 692 episodes, in Australia, and it hit the UK television screens in 1987. Originally named Prisoner for its home audience and re-titled Prisoner Cell Block H for overseas viewing, the series became one of the most watched Australian soaps of all time.
Made by Grundy Television, Prisoner Cell Block H was the first of its kind, tackling issues such as rape, homosexuality, murder and violence. Prisoner, in effect, broke all of the rules set out by previous Aussie made soaps such as The Young Doctors, The Sullivans and The Restless Years - no pretty young faces, no nice homes and no romance. This seemed to surprise everyone who tuned in during the first airing; perhaps nobody quite knew what to expect about a drama series set inside a prison for women. They were immediately gripped!
Bea Smith, portrayed by actress Val Lehman, is one of Prisoner Cell Block H's stalwarts. She was introduced to viewers in the very first episode and one of her primary characteristics was her hatred of drugs and her absolute refusal to have them inside the prison. Viewers followed Bea Smith's ups and downs throughout 375 episodes and she remains the undisputed top-dog of Wentworth Detention Centre. With over an indulgent 25 hours of footage from this unique series, this beautifully packaged ultimate collection DVD box set will make the perfect gift for all Prisoner fans or Blockies as they are lovingly called!!
