Photographer Adam (Leigh Whannell) awakens in a filthy, abandoned bathroom with no idea how he got there. Chained to a pipe on the opposite side of the room is oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes), while between them lies the body of an apparently dead man clutching a revolver and a cassette recorder.

Neither man initially understands why they have been chosen, but a series of recorded messages soon reveals that they have become unwilling participants in an elaborate game devised by the mysterious serial killer known as Jigsaw. Unlike a conventional murderer, Jigsaw places his victims in carefully constructed situations designed to test how far they are prepared to go to stay alive.

For Gordon, the stakes extend far beyond his own survival. He is ordered to kill Adam before time runs out, with the lives of his wife Alison (Monica Potter) and young daughter also hanging in the balance. Trapped with only a handful of cryptic clues and two apparently useless hacksaws, Adam and Gordon must uncover the connection between them and discover why Jigsaw has selected them before their increasingly desperate situation forces them to make an unimaginable choice.

Meanwhile, Detective David Tapp (Danny Glover), a former police officer whose pursuit of Jigsaw has become an obsession, continues his own investigation into the killer and the disturbing games that have already claimed several victims.

Directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell from a story conceived by the pair, Saw combines psychological horror, mystery and gruesome ingenuity in a claustrophobic battle of wills where survival comes at a price - and escaping Jigsaw's game may require considerably more than simply finding a way out.
