Soul Man

Details

The smash-hit 80s teen comedy from director Steve Miner (Lake Placid; Halloween H2O; Forever Young; House) and writer Carol Black (creator of Growing Pains and The Wonder Years), Soul Man released on DVD by Anchor Bay UK on 19th June 2006, comes complete with a full length audio commentary by Miner and the film's star, C. Thomas Howell (Hidalgo; The Hitcher; E.T.).

Howell heads a stellar cast that also includes Rae Dawn Chong (Crying Freeman; Hideaway), Arye Gross (Minority Report; Gone In Sixty Seconds), James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader), James B. Sikking (Fever Pitch; The Pelican Brief), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld) and Leslie Nielsen (Scary Movie 4).

When Mark Watson (C. Thomas Howell)'s wealthy father decides to do him a 'big character-building favour' by not funding his studies at Harvard Law School, Mark's only option is to apply for a scholarship. Fortunately, there's one available for a single black student from his hometown of LA. Mark has one small problem - he's white!

Remedying that minor hitch with an extremely large dose of tanning pills, a brand-new hairdo and some added soul to his voice, Mark passes himself off as an African-American student and begins his studies under the tutelage of the fierce Professor Banks (James Earl Jones).

But Mark is about to learn much more than any Harvard professor could ever teach him. Along with his ebullient best friend Gordon (Arye Gross) and beautiful fellow student Sarah (Rae Dawn Chong), Mark is given a life-changing lesson that involves racism, discrimination, sex crazed liberal white girls and basketball!

An engagingly offbeat comedy that has earned itself cult status amongst fans of 80s teen movies, Soul Man takes a wry look at the social and racial attitudes that often colour people's perceptions of each other.
