The list of alumni from American TV institution Saturday Night Live reads like a veritable who's who of comedy, music & television from the past 30 years.
Saturday Night Live is one of America's best-loved, longest-running and most infamous television shows. According to the New York Times, Saturday Night Live is "still the most pervasive influence on the art of comedy in contemporary culture."
The program has won 19 Emmy® Awards and been nominated for scores more, as well as winning the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award. Since 1975 it has introduced TV audiences to the finest of American comedy talent, with its roster of regular stars and guest hosts featuring the cream of film and TV funny men and women. As for the music, the show has consistently picked the finest names in rock, pop and soul to appear live on the show, from established big names to the best up and coming talent.
Its first incarnation introduced the American public to Aykroyd, Belushi, Chase, and Radner, as well as its regular skits and parodies and its rotating guest host system that have remained constants for more than 30 years.
Now, for the first time ever, the first season of Saturday Night Live is set to make its debut on DVD courtesy of Universal Playback on 16th July 2007.
Spread across a mammoth eight discs, it contains 24 FULL episodes. In addition to its mainstay cast, that sees Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris and Laraine Newman joining the aforementioned Aykroyd, Belushi, Chase and Radner, it also boasts an impressive array of guest hosts, all of whom join in the fun and sketches. The list includes Andy Kaufman, Richard Pryor (in blistering form), Rob Reiner, Candice Bergen, Elliott Gould, Kris Kristofferson, Raquel Welch, Lily Tomlin, Madeline Kahn, Anthony Perkins, Desi Arnaz, Peter Boyle, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.
On the music front the show features an amazing line-up of guest stars with fantastic live performances covering all genres from rock to pop, via reggae, country, blue-eyed soul and grittier funk, taking in the nascent punk rock movement along the way. The list includes diverse names such as Abba, Billy Preston, Randy Newman, Gil Scott-Heron, Martha Reeves, The Stylistics, Neil Sedaka, Jimmy Cliff, The Loving Spoonful's John Sebastian, Carly Simon and Rita Coolidge. One of the highlights sees Patti Smith Group performing incendiary live versions of Gloria and My Generation; another sees Paul Simon, guest hosting a show in hilarious style, verbally sparring with former singing partner Art Garfunkeland performing songs such as The Boxer.
