Space Camp (1986)
Monday 13th October 2008
Making his debut feature appearance, two-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix (Walk The Line; Gladiator) - credited as Leaf Phoenix - co-stars alongside Kate Capshaw (Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom), Lea Thompson (the Back To The Future trilogy), Kelly Preston (Jerry Maguire), Larry B. Scott (The Karate Kid), Tate Donovan (Memphis Belle) and Tom Skerritt (Top Gun; Alien) in Space Camp, a cosmic, comedy sci-fi adventure for all the family, released on DVD (£5.99) from 10th November 2008 courtesy of Fremantle Home Entertainment.
For five everyday kids with a passion for the US space programme, spending the summer at NASA's Space Camp training to be astronauts is like a dream come true. Kathryn (Thompson) is a studious type with hopes of becoming a shuttle pilot, while Kevin (Donovan) is more concerned with just having a good time. Tish (Preston) is your typical, gum chewing 'valley girl' but with one notable difference - she has a photographic memory. Rudy (Scott) is the scientist of the group and, rounding out the team is Max, a 'Star Wars' obsessive who forms a special relationship with Jinx, the camp's in-house droid-like robot.
Charged with showing them the ropes is test pilot and astronaut Andie Bergstrom (Capshaw), whose own dreams of flying the shuttle into space have so far been thwarted - until now! When Max's friendship with Jinx results in a space shuttle test exercise going disastrously wrong while the gang are on board the vehicle, the wannabe astronauts, along with Andie, are accidentally blasted into orbit. Facing the adventure of a lifetime, Kathryn, Kevin, Tish, Rudy and Max must now put their resources together and work as a team to take control of the shuttle and find their way back to earth before their limited oxygen supplies run out.
A thrilling action-adventure romp with plenty of laughs and more than a few moments of nail-biting tension, Space Camp is an entertaining family movie sure to appeal to fans of Apollo 13, Flight Of The Navigator, The Last Starfighter and Explorers.
