Winner Of The San Diego Film Critics Award (2006) and Deauville Film Festival Grand Special Prize (2007) and nominated for several 2007 Independent Spirit Awards, The Dead Girl weaves together five haunting tales, chronicling the effects the brutal death of one woman has on the lives of five unrelated women…"The Stranger", "The Sister", "The Wife", "The Mother" and "The Dead Girl". Set in Los Angeles, this startling and sensitive independent release is brought to DVD by Entertainment in Video and is available to buy and rent on 29th September 2008.
Written and directed by the acclaimed Karen Moncrieff (Blue Car), The Dead Girl draws stunning performances from an all star cast including Oscar Nominees Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, About A Boy, In Her Shoes) and Piper Laurie (Children of a Lesser God, Carrie) as well as from Brittany Murphy (Sin City, Clueless, Just Married), Marcia Gay Harden (Meet Joe Black, Mona Lisa Smile), Rose Byrne (Troy, Marie Antoinette, 28 Weeks Later) and James Franco (Spider Man 1, 2, 3).
"The Stranger" - when Arden (Toni Collette) discovers a dead body, her miserable, circumscribed life caring for her domineering mother (Piper Laurie) is changed over night. The publicity generated by her discovery thrusts her into a new world and into an unlikely bond with the mysterious Rudy (Giovanni Ribisi), with whom she works through some of her own dark dramas.
"The Sister" - as forensics graduate at the county morgue, Leah (Rose Bryne) is startled by the arrival of a dead girl. Still haunted by the abduction of her sister 15 years before and juggling her own emotions as well as those of her mother and father, Leah notices a familiar birth mark on the body of the unidentified girl. Convinced this girl is her sister, Leah feels a rush of release and opens herself to her first ever taste of intimacy... a date with co-worker Derek (James Franco).
"The Wife" - when trapped wife Ruth (Mary Beth Hurt) finds bloody and torn women's clothing in her husband Carl's (Nick Searcy) industrial storage units, their match to those of the latest serial killer's victim takes their feuding relationship outside the confines of the trailer and Carl's nightly drives suddenly take on a very sinister infidelity.
"The Mother" - long since estranged from her runaway daughter, Melora (Marcia Gay Haden) heads to L.A after police identify a dead girl as the missing daughter. Still reeling from the news, Melora is compelled to find her daughter's former roommate Rosetta (Kerry Washington) to catch up on the life she lost. But what she learns from Rosetta throws Melora's already upturned world into spasms. With a history of abuse, drug addiction and prostitution, her daughter also leaves something very precious behind.
"The Dead Girl" - hooker Krista's chaotic life never quite seems to come together. While busy buying her three-year-old daughter a present, she is side-stepped into going with one of her clients and avenging the beating of her girlfriend. Desperate to make it right and get to her daughter's birthday on time, a broken down motorbike only adds to her frustrations. When her only choice is to hitch hike, Krista thinks luck is finally on her side when Carl drives by and offers her a lift. There's just one problem... he needs to make one more stop en route.
