Gamer (2009)
Friday 1st January 2010
On-line gaming hits a terrifying new level of simulated reality which enables human beings to control and destroy fellow humans in the sci-fi action thriller Gamer. The film is released by Entertainment In Video on rental and retail DVD and Blu-ray on 18th January 2010.
Set in 2034, Gamer stars Gerard Butler (RocknRolla, 300, Phantom of the Opera) as an unwilling player and was written and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, co-creators of the hugely successful Crank franchise. The electronic gaming industry has been revolutionized by reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C Hall) and his mind-control technology is rampant all over the world. He has developed tiny cells that replicate in the human brain, gradually passing full control of the human's actions and thoughts to a third party.
The first application for the new technology was Society, an online environment in which gamers pay to control a real person in a pseudo community. However, it is Castle's latest creation which is the real shocker. Slayers is a first-person shooter game which allows millions of gamers to act out their most savage fantasies online in front of a global audience by using real death row prisoners as gladiators who fight to the end. Any inmate who lives through 30 contests wins his freedom.
Kable (Gerard Butler) is the superstar and cult hero of Slayers and is controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock star status who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week. Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, Kable must survive long enough to escape the game, free his family, regain his identity and save mankind from Castle's ruthless and horrific technology. However, although he doesn't know it he is not entirely alone in his fight for survival. A rebel group called The Humanz recognizes that Kable has become more popular among fans of the game than the game itself and if they can win his support they think they stand a chance of destroying everything that Castle has created.
