Volunteer home-care worker, Nishina Rika, calls at the home of an elderly patient, Sachie, to find the woman bed-ridden and in a state of terrified shock. Upstairs, Rika comes across a closet shut with duct tape and, on opening it, is surprised to discover a young boy and a black cat. Several days earlier Sachie's son, Katsuya, returns home from work to find his wife Kazumi in a seemingly catatonic state. 

Sensing a presence in the room, he turns to see a boy with pure white skin. At work, Katsuya's sister, Hitomi is attacked by what she perceives to be an angry spirit. Meanwhile, Sachie's body has been discovered by the police, and with her Rika, who is still in deep shock but otherwise unhurt. Investigations reveal that Sachie's home was once owned by a man, Takeo, who had murdered his wife in the house. Their son, Toshio, six years old at the time of the murder, has never been found.

Written and directed by Shimizu Takashi (Tomie: Re-birth), The Grudge stars Okina Megumi (St. John's Wort) as Rika, Takako Fuji as Kayako and Yuya Ozeki as Toshio.

The Grudge: Platinum Edition will be released on DVD by Premier Asia on 21st February 2005.
