One, two, Freddy's coming for you...
Freddy Krueger returns to haunt a new generation of 4K televisions as Warner Home Video brings together the complete original A Nightmare on Elm Street series in an extensive Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD SteelBook Collection.
Beginning with Wes Craven's groundbreaking 1984 original and concluding with his inventive return to the series a decade later in Wes Craven's New Nightmare, the collection charts Freddy's transformation from a terrifying figure lurking in the shadows of his victims' dreams into one of horror cinema's most recognisable characters.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) introduces Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) and her friends, whose dreams are invaded by a horribly scarred killer wearing a battered fedora and a glove fitted with razor-sharp blades. As Nancy investigates, she discovers that Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was once a child murderer who escaped justice before being hunted down and burned alive by the parents of Elm Street. Now Freddy has found a way to take his revenge through their children - and dying in one of his nightmares means dying for real.
The enormous success of Craven's original film led to A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), in which Freddy attempts to use teenager Jesse Walsh (Mark Patton) as a means of escaping the dream world. Nancy returned for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), joining a group of troubled teenagers at Westin Hills psychiatric hospital who discover that their unusual dreams share a common source. Rather than simply running from Freddy, the Dream Warriors learn to use their own abilities within the dream world to fight back.
The series continued with A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988), directed by Renny Harlin, as Freddy targets another group of teenagers through the dreams of Alice Johnson (Lisa Wilcox). Alice returned the following year for A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989), where Freddy finds a disturbing new route into the dreams of his victims.
By Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991), Freddy's murderous campaign has devastated Springwood and the film delves further into the killer's past while apparently bringing his reign of terror to an end.
The original series then took an unexpected turn with Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994). Rather than simply producing another sequel, Craven brought Freddy into the real world. Heather Langenkamp plays a fictionalised version of herself, with Robert Englund, John Saxon, Wes Craven and other figures from the series appearing as themselves as an ancient evil begins adopting the form of Freddy Krueger. The film's self-referential approach anticipated the ideas Craven would develop further two years later with Scream and provided the original Elm Street series with one of its most distinctive entries.
More than forty years after Freddy first appeared in Nancy Thompson's nightmares, Warner Bros. has now restored the entire seven-film series for 4K Ultra HD. Each film receives its own native 2160p UHD presentation with HDR10, created from newly restored elements and retaining the texture and appearance of the original photography. The collection also includes nine different cuts across the seven films.
The original A Nightmare on Elm Street is accompanied by both its theatrical and uncut versions, while A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child includes its theatrical and unrated cuts. The set even preserves one of the franchise's more unusual theatrical gimmicks. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare originally switched into 3D for its climax, and the collection includes the anaglyph 3D presentation together with a pair of traditional red-and-blue 3D glasses.
The Limited Edition contains seven individual SteelBooks, housed within a steel outer library case, with each film included on 4K Ultra HD alongside Blu-ray presentations. Across the collection are hours of archive supplementary material carried forward from previous editions, including documentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, alternate endings and audio commentaries.
The original film alone includes two commentaries, the extensive Never Sleep Again making-of documentary, The House That Freddy Built, Night Terrors, alternate endings and behind-the-scenes material. The sequels retain their established archive supplements, while the collection also introduces two newly produced featurettes featuring fresh interviews with figures from the franchise including Robert Englund, Jack Sholder, Chuck Russell and cinematographer Mark Irwin.
Together, the seven films follow Freddy Krueger from the genuinely frightening dream stalker of Craven's original through the increasingly elaborate fantasy and black humour of the sequels before ultimately returning to his darker origins with New Nightmare.
