The second season of Nip/Tuck quickly picks up the action from the first with startling revelations from the outset. The cutting edge second series, which received rave reviews, garnered two additional Golden Globe Award nominations including Best Performance by an Actor (Julian McMahon) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Joely Richardson). Special guest stars to make a visit to the surgery this season include Vanessa Redgrave and Alec Baldwin. Celebrity Joan Rivers (as herself), who is famous for having undergone many cosmetic surgeries, consults the doctors with an astonishing request.
Having survived a destructive relationship with a dangerous criminal at the end of season one, plastic surgery partners Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) and Dr. Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) managed to escape with their practice and their lives intact.
However, with Sean's family life consistently far from serene and Christian left dealing with the shock of discovering he is not the father of a child he was expecting with Gina (Jessalyn Gilsig), turmoil continues to bubble beneath the flawless facade on show to those whose lives the duo work to improve.
Joely Richardson also returns as Julia, Sean's emotionally worn wife, whose frustration with the direction of her own life, coupled with her husband's adultery and a brush with the criminal underworld has left her just as uncertain as ever about her family and future.
Season two opens as both Sean and Christian struggle to come to terms with turning 40. Making things more difficult, both men must cope with the ramifications of a surprise visit from Julia's narcissistic mother, Erica (Academy Award Winner and Richardson's real-life mother Vanessa Redgrave), who arrives on the scene demanding plastic surgery for a younger appearance.
Whatever precarious balance there is, is further unsettled with the arrival of life coach Ava Moore (Famke Jansen) who makes a lasting impact, particularly on the McNamara household.
