Details

The Virgin Soldiers, the impressive adaptation of Leslie Thomas's best-selling, scandalous novel centres on a group of naïve, young British Army recruits conscripted soldiers serving in Singapore in the 1950s.

Young and inexperienced, the men have yet to prove themselves in bed and battle - and seem to be failing miserably at both. Foremost amongst the bunch is Private Brigg, who first encounters prostitute Juicy Lucy, then Sergeant Major's daughter Phillipa Raskin, and finally the enemy, in the form of armed guerillas who lay seige to the barracks.

Both affectionate and affecting in its look at young men in wartime, the film has a wonderful cast which includes Lynn Redgrave (Georgy Girl, The National Health), Hywel Bennett (Shelley, The Family Way) and Nigel Davenport (Don't Rock The Boat), along with early appearances from Christopher Timothy, Wayne Sleep, James Cosmo - and a young David Bowie. Genuine and heartfelt, The Virgin Soldiers is an insightful and hugely underrated British comic drama.

The high definition remaster of The Virgin Soldiers is presented with original mono audio sound track and released on Blu-ray 22nd July 2024 from Powerhouse Films.
