In turn of the 20th century London, inventor Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan) has come up with the secrets to flight, electricity and even in-line skates. But still tthe establishment dismisses him as a crackpot. Desperate to be taken seriously, Fogg makes an outlandish bet with Lord Kelvin (Jim Broadbent), the head of the stodgy Royal Academy of Science.
If Phileas can manage to circumnavigate the globe in just eighty days, Kelvin will step down from his position, ceding it to Fogg. But if he fails, he agrees never to set foot in the Academy - or indeed invent anything - again. Fogg agrees to the bet and along with his valet, the mysterious Passepartout (Jackie Chan), he prepares for his journey. After side-stepping local constable Inspector Fix (Ewen Bremner), the two embark on their epic voyage, joining forces with thrill-seeking French artist Monique La Roche (Cecile De France) along the way.
With Lord Kelvin attempting to thwart them at every turn, Fogg and his companions make their way from Turkey to Morocco to the United States in a race that becomes ever more heart-pounding. And before the journeys end, Fogg will discover that the approval of his peers is not all he needs for a successful life.
