The extraordinary feature debut from Spanish writer and directors Luis Piedrahita and Rodrigo Sopeña, Fermat's Room, released on DVD (£14.99) by Revolver Entertainment on 7th September 2009, is a quirky and beautifully executed mathematical thriller that recalls the tension of Cube and Saw.

By adopting unusual techniques, Piedrahita and Sopeña's first cinema release is utterly enthralling. Starring two of Spain's foremost actors, Lluís Homar (Bad Education, Broken Embraces) and Santi Millán (Idiot Love), alongside veteran Hispanic performer Federico Luppi (Pan's Labyrinth), the performances are exceptional in this ingenious and mesmerising film.

Fermat's Room revolves around four supposed strangers and expert mathematicians who have been invited by the unknown and mysterious Fermat, to a prestigious gathering set in a comfortable and ambient room within an isolated house. With the door firmly shut behind them, they are sent a variety of enigmas via a PDA to solve and test their intelligence.

However, it is not long until they discover they are locked in and providing incorrect answers to the problems causes the walls to move inwards, shrinking the room and threatening to crush all inside. With no obvious way out and the riddles becoming progressively demanding and more difficult to solve, they realise the highly likely probability of fatal consequences. Piedrahita and Sopena maximize on mathematicians' renowned theoretical thinking to deliver a tension filled film combined with unremitting mystery and an unanticipated twist, which will both stun and viewers.
