Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor find that moving house is the least of their worries when their entire neighbourhood is mysteriously transported into a prehistoric world in David Robert Mitchell's The End of Oak Street, coming to home entertainment following its cinema release earlier this year.

It's the 1980s and, on the surface at least, life on Oak Street appears reassuringly ordinary. Greg (Ewan McGregor) and Denise Platt (Anne Hathaway) live in suburban America with their teenage children Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery), surrounded by the familiar homes, gardens and neighbours of an apparently idyllic community.

Behind closed doors, however, the Platt family isn't quite as perfect as it appears. Greg and Denise's marriage is under strain, leaving their children increasingly concerned about whether their parents will remain together. Then something happens which makes the family's domestic problems seem considerably less important.

A mysterious cosmic event suddenly tears Oak Street away from suburbia and transports the entire neighbourhood somewhere completely unknown. Their houses are still there. Their neighbours are still there. The world around them isn't.

The familiar landscape beyond Oak Street has disappeared, temperatures begin to rise and strange vegetation appears around the neighbourhood. Before long, the residents make an even more alarming discovery. They aren't alone.

Oak Street now appears to exist within a prehistoric world populated by dinosaurs, and some of its new neighbours regard the displaced humans as little more than another potential source of food. Cut off from everything they know and with no obvious way home, the Platts must adapt rapidly to an environment in which the assumptions and conveniences of modern suburban life no longer apply.

Survival increasingly depends upon the family putting aside the tensions that were threatening to pull them apart and learning to rely upon one another as their once-safe neighbourhood becomes a hunting ground for increasingly dangerous prehistoric predators.

Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, The End of Oak Street marks the filmmaker's return to the big screen following Under the Silver Lake and his acclaimed supernatural horror It Follows. Mitchell combines science-fiction mystery, survival thriller and large-scale creature adventure with a story centred upon a family already facing its own crisis before its world is quite literally turned upside down.

Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead the cast as Denise and Greg Platt, with Maisy Stella and Christian Convery playing their children Audrey and Brian. Jordan Alexa Davis and P.J. Byrne also feature among the ensemble.

The film is produced by J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen for Bad Robot alongside David Robert Mitchell, Matt Jackson and Tommy Harper. Behind the camera, Mitchell reunites with cinematographer Michael Gioulakis, who previously shot It Follows and Under the Silver Lake, while Up, The Batman and Jurassic World composer Michael Giacchino provides the score.

The End Of Oak Street is released on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD soon from Warner Home Video.
