Directed by Sammo Hung, starring both Sammo and Jackie Chan, and featuring explosive fight choreography by Yuen Biao (Shanghai Noon; Project A; Game Of Death), Heart Of The Dragon is a rare example of Hong Kong cinema successfully integrating strong characterisation and emotional drama into a bone-crunching action film.
Presented for the first time on DVD in its original director's cut version, this Hong Kong Legends edition of Heart Of The Dragon boasts a host of extra features, including the film's much talked about deleted fight scenes.
Jackie Chan stars as Tat Fung, a highly respected SWAT team officer who dreams of giving up his career on the force to go sailing around the world. However, his dreams are confounded by his responsibilities to his mentally challenged brother, Danny (Sammo Hung), and a loving but demanding girlfriend (Emily Chu).
While playing a game of cops and robbers with a gang of local children, Danny is mistaken for a real cop by a criminal who is delivering the loot from a high profile robbery to his gangland boss. In the confusion, Danny unwittingly gains possession of the loot. The courier, now fearing for his life, turns himself into the police with the intention of informing on his associates in exchange for police protection. Innocently caught up in the ensuing gangland dispute, Danny is kidnapped by the gang who hope their actions will force Tat to divulge the secret whereabouts of the informant. With his brother's life in danger, Tat must decide what is most important in his life - his family, his morals or the law and his career.
In between its dazzling action set-pieces - which include a breathtaking car chase and a remarkable, extended fight sequence set on a construction site - Heart Of The Dragon brilliantly showcases the rarely seen but considerable acting abilities of its two leads, Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan.
Heart Of The Dragon will be released on DVD by Hong Kong Legends on 30th August 2004.
