Red River, Tennessee, 1817 - John Bell (Donald Sutherland; Cold Mountain, Lord of War) and his family are visited by an unknown, unseen presence that terrorises the family. The haunting starts with strange noises around the farm, and soon escalates into violent physical contact with family members, causing psychological and physical torment. Gradually, the attacks grow in strength with the spirit slapping, pulling, dragging and beating the Bells' daughter Betsy (Rachel Hurd-Wood; Peter Pan).

The Bell's search for rational explanations and ways to rid their house of the entity, but to no avail. The poltergeist speaks to the family in multiple voices that sounded like the wind - promising that one day it will kill. Fearing that the haunting was caused by a local woman - branded a witch - who had put a curse on the family as a result of a land dispute, it is up to John find a way to exorcise the demon and restore his family and good name.

The subject of over 20 books, the Bell Witch haunting is the most documented haunting in American history. Even in the modern era, the small American town where it all started bears witness to the numerous occasions when the entity has come back to haunt its residents. It was not until 1998, when the manuscript of a local schoolteacher was found, that the horrifying and shocking answer to what caused this haunting is finally revealed.
