Victim of glamorous geisha Hatsumomo's (Gong Li) jealousy and vicious bullying, it's the kindness of a stranger known only as The Chairman (Ken Watanabe) that keeps Sayuri's dreams alive.

The prospect of winning his heart is realised when Hatsumomo's bitter rival Mameha allows her to join the hidden world of geisha. In an incredible transition, aided by the elegant Mameha (BAFTA nominee and former Bond Girl Michelle Yeoh), the young, impoverished girl emerges as a blossoming geisha, who can stop a man in his tracks with a single glance. Adept in all the artistic and social skills a geisha must master, Sayuri soon becomes Japan's most celebrated geisha.
