One of the most acclaimed directors of his generation, Martin Scorsese's many credits include The Aviator, Casino, Cape Fear, GoodFellas, Raging Bull and Taxi Driver. For The Departed, Scorsese has assembled a truly remarkable cast including three time Academy Award winner Jack Nicholson (About Schmidt, As Good As It Gets, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest); two-time Oscar nominee Leonardo DiCaprio (Blood Diamond, The Aviator, Gangs of New York); Academy Award winner Matt Damon (Syriana, Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Eleven, Good Will Hunting); Martin Sheen (The West Wing, Apocalypse Now); Mark Wahlberg (The Italian Job, Boogie Nights); Ray Winstone (Breaking and Entering, Vincent, Sexy Beast) and Alec Baldwin (The Aviator, Will and Grace).
The Departed is set in South Boston where the Massachusetts State Police Department is waging an all-out war against the city's top organised crime ring. The key is to end the reign of powerful mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson), something that can only be achieved from the inside.
Young rookie Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate Costello's mob. But while Billy is working to gain Costello's trust, another young cop, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon), is quickly rising through the ranks of the state police. Earning a place in the Special Investigations Unit, Colin is among a handful of elite officers whose mission is to bring Costello down. However, what his superiors don't know is that Colin is working for Costello, keeping the crime boss one step ahead of the police.
Both Billy and Colin become deeply consumed by their double lives; but when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that they have a mole in their midst, the young cops find themselves in mortal danger. Their only hope for survival is to uncover the identity of the other man before they themselves are exposed.
