John Travolta and James Gandolfini head the all-star cast of Lonely Hearts, a devastating portrait of two of America's most infamous serial killers. Making its DVD debut on 29th October 2007 courtesy of Entertainment In Video, this thrilling film, set during the 1940s, is based on the real-life murder spree of Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez. It is also the poignant story of Detective Elmer C Robinson's whose participation in their capture, incarceration and subsequent executions would cost him the ultimate price.
Directed by Todd Robinson, Elmer's grandfather, this US theatrical hit stars John Travolta (Hairspray, Wild Hogs, Swordfish, Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty), James Gandolfini (TV's The Sopranos, All the Kings Men, Surviving Christmas), Salma Hayek (TV's Ugly Betty, Frida, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Desperado), Jared Leto (Lord of War, Alexander, Fight Club, TV's My So Called Life) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park, Wild at Heart).
In the late 1940's, the "Lonely Hearts Killers" - Martha Beck (Hayek) and Raymond Fernandez (Leto) - held America in thrall. For the tale of the Latino Lothario and his plump, love-sick girlfriend who killed lonely, sex-starved women was one weirder and more intriguing than anything even the trashiest pulp magazine could invent.
The couple's lethal scam was simple. Ray would place an advertisement in the personal columns of local newspapers. The elderly spinsters and lonely war widows who requested a meeting with the "sexy Latin lover" would then be swindled out of their life's savings before being viciously murdered in a bloodbath of sexual frenzy.
Ironically, Ray's initial introduction to Martha was as a prospective mark. But when they met, it was love at first sight, perhaps as a result of their penchant for kinky sex and their mutual love for duplicity and easy money.
Determined to bring the pair to justice are Detective Robinson and his partner Charles Hilderbrandt (James Gandolfini). As they become obsessed with capturing Ray and Martha, so the work begins to invade Robinson's personal life, isolating him from those he loves - and forcing him to choose between his family and his profession.
