Good Night, And Good Luck

Details

Co-written, co-starring and directed by George Clooney, Good Night, And Good Luck is a gripping political thriller set in the McCarthy era about a broadcast journalist who took on McCarthy at the height of the communist witch hunts, with nothing but the truth and won.

Released to buy on DVD on 26th June 2006 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, nominated for five Academy Awards, four Golden Globes and five BAFTA Awards, Good Night, And Good Luck won the David Lean Award for Direction.

The film tells the true story of the legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn; L.A. Confidential) who in the late 1950s boldly took on the malevolent power of US Senator Joseph McCarthy during the infamous paranoid investigations into 'subversive' communist sympathisers within the entertainment industry. After one particular incident is drawn to their attention, Murrow and his fearless producer Fred Friendly (George Clooney; Ocean's Eleven, Syriana) decide they've had enough.

With the aid of the supportive CBS newsroom staff which included Joe Wershba (Robert Downey Jr; Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Chaplin) (Jeff Daniels; The Hours,The Squid and the Whale) and Shirley Wershba (Patricia Clarkson; The Station Agent, Far From Heaven), they defy corporate and sponsorship interference to question the dubious means and motives of Senator McCarthy and his 'investigations'. This was a brave yet dangerous endeavour, as McCarthy began directing his communist enquiries directly at CBS, and in particular, at Mr Murrow.

Shot in crisp black and white and set in a few rooms at the CBS News headquarters, Good Night, And Good Luck interweaves engrossing real-life footage from the witch-hunt trials with the indelible and electric tale of Edward Murrow's reports. Stylish, topical and relevant to the issues of today, the film features outstanding performances from David Strathairn and the supporting cast.
