Written and directed by action movie maestro John Woo (Bullet In The Head; The Killer) and a long-time favourite of Hong Kong cinema aficionados, the sweeping king fu epic, Last Hurrah For Chivalry comes to DVD for the first time in the UK from Hong Kong Legends on 19th February 2007, fully restored and presented as a special Ultra-Bit edition boasting the ultimate in picture and sound quality.
For John Woo fans disappointed by the director's most recent Hollywood output, Last Hurrah For Chivalry is a welcome treat - an action-packed swordplay spectacular displaying early signs of the trademark cinematic flair, narrative themes and elaborate set-pieces that would make his later ultra-violent gangster thrillers so unforgettable.
A classic Woo tale of honour, brotherhood and loyalty, the story concerns Kao who, unable to protect his family from the murderous attentions of the evil kung fu master Pai, seeks vengeance by employing the services of a pair of highly skilled, mercenary swordsmen, Chang and Green. During a series of deadly encounters with Pai and his cohorts, the two fighters begin to develop an almost fraternal bond based on their growing mutual trust and respect for each other. But amidst the carnage of their mission, they soon discover that the scheming Kao has his own evil plans to exact a terrible betrayal on the very people who have vowed to help him.
One of the most impressive and reliable action directors around, John Woo keeps the pace of the movie at full tilt through a non-stop series of lengthy and exquisitely choreographed swordfights and action sequences that make Last Hurrah For Chivalry a must-see for all swordplay and kung fu cinema lovers.
