
Released on DVD by Artificial Eye on 9th April 2012, The Portuguese Nun is one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2011 tells the story of Julie, a young French actress shooting a film in Lisbon about a 17th Century nun who is seduced by a soldier. Among the city's enigmatic and transient inhabitants, she encounters a young Nun and the exchange between the two women changes Julie's destiny forever.
Starring Leonor Baldaque and directed by Eugène Green, this absorbing drama is the fourth film by the acclaimed New York-born filmmaker Eugène Green and his first to be released in the UK.
Eugène Green was born in New York in the late 1940s. Having moved to France in 1969, he studied literature, linguistics, art and film history and received the French citizenship in 1976. In 1999, he made his debut with Night After Night (Toutes les Nuits), at the age of fifty. In 2001, he received the Luis-Delluc Prize, and gained attention as his second feature The Living World was screened at the Cannes Film Festival 2003. His short film The Signs has also been shown at the Cannes Film Festival.
