At a way station on a lonely highway, a man obsessed with the death of his wife discovers a woman being strangled. Trucker Joe (Cage) intervenes and saves her but learns she was using her near-death experience to contact the spirit of her comatosed teenage daughter Billie (Penelope Mitchell).

Empathising with her struggle, Joe helps Julie (Franka Potente) recover her daughter's lost soul. However, when Billie wakes up they quickly discover she's not her old self as the spirit in the daughter's body is now that of Joe's dead wife...
