Entertainment In Video has announced a 9th November 2009 rental and retail DVD and Blu-ray release date for The Informers, a compelling but dark story from Marco Weber, the producer of the Golden Globe nominated Igby Goes Down. It boasts an impressive cast which includes Billy Bob Thornton (Bad Santa; Intolerable Cruelty; Monsters Ball), Kim Basinger (Cellular; LA Confidential; Batman; Nine ½ Weeks), Winona Ryder (Girl Interrupted; Dracula; Little Women; Edward Scissorhands) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler; Nine ½ Weeks; Angel Heart).
The film is based on the best-selling novel by Bret Easton Ellis who also co-wrote the film's screenplay. In other works of his such as Less Than Zero and American Psycho, Ellis brilliantly dissects contemporary American society as a culture in which too much is never enough.
For The Informers' he returns to early 1980s Los Angeles with a multi-strand narrative that deftly balances a vast array of characters who represent both the top of the heap (a Hollywood dream merchant, a dissolute rock star and an ageing newscaster) and the bottom (a voyeuristic doorman and an ex-con).
Connecting all these intertwining strands are the quintessential Ellis protagonists a group of beautiful blonde young men and women who hide behind the glitz, glamour and music of eighties LA lifestyle and are consumed by a decadent way of life that detaches and isolates them from the real world.
They sleep all day and party all night, doing drugs and one another without realizing they are dancing on the edge of a volcano.
