Directed by Alberto Cavalcanti and digitally restored and released by Optimum Home Entertainment on DVD and Blu-ray for the first time on 25th July 2011, Graham Greene's Went The Day Well is a superb piece of British wartime propaganda where German paratroopers, disguised as Royal Engineers, set up an advance post for a planned invasion in an unsuspecting British village.

The villagers have no reason to suspect the troops are German paratroops and that their village leader, Oliver Wilsford, is a Fifth Columnist. However, trivial things start to arouse suspicions and Germans eventually reveal themselves and round up the villagers. The community is helpless. Attempt after attempt to get help goes wrong and villager after villager gives their life in an attempt to get help. Ultimately the alarm is given, and the Home Guard and Army pour into the village...
