Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal, Mission Impossible II, Meet Joe Black, Silence Of The Lambs, Shadowlands) stars as the mad Dr. Kellogg who became famous for inventing corn flakes, peanut butter and the electric blanket as well as for his obsession with cleaning out the bowels with frequent enemas!
Also Starring Matthew Broderick (Inspector Gadget, Biloxi Blues, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Freshman), Bridget Fonda (Kiss Of The Dragon, The Whole Shebang, Single White Female), Dana Carvey (Waynes' World), John Cusack (Being John Malkovich, Serendipity, The Sure Thing) and Lara Flynn Boyle (Men In Black II, Twin Peaks), The Road To Wellville is created by the British director and producer Sir Alan Parker (Life of David Gale, Angela's Ashes, Birdy, Fame, Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Angel Heart, Mississippi Burning and The Commitments).
The film has been described as 'a comedy of the heart and other organs' and tells the story of Dr. Kellogg's famous health sanatorium and of the many rich and famous American guests who visit there. Dr. Kellogg's philosophies were based mainly on his theories of biological living and he could frequently be heard giving lectures on the dangers of eating meat, drinking alcohol, smoking and engaging in sex.
The film focuses on Will and Eleanor Lightbody (Matthew Broderick and Bridget Fonda) who are visiting Dr. Kelloggs' establishment in Battle Creek. It is the first time for husband Will, but the third visit for Eleanor who confides that she finds the healthy lifestyle more than revitalising.
Whilst at the San, the Lightbodys' relationship goes from bad to worse as Will is immediately whisked away from his wife and taken off for his first enema. Meanwhile, Charles Ossining (John Cusack) is in Battle Creek trying to start a new breakfast food company called Per-Fo.
Charles is in town to see his business partner, Goodloe Bender, who has failed to secure a factory site for Per-Fo and who has spent all of his aunt's start up money for the company. Yet Bender is quick to assure Charles that all will be fine.
Bender has met up with George Kellogg, one of Dr. Kellogg's many adopted children. George, who received little love and attention as a child, resents his father's Sanatorium and is keen to join Ossining and Bender in a company, which could benefit from the famous Kellogg name.
Will Will ever get out of the Sanatorium alive? If he does will his marriage ever be the same again? Will the Per-Fo boys ever establish a successful business and will Dr. Kellogg ever make peace with his son? All is unravelled in bold, inimitable style on The Road To Wellville.
