Details
The Twentyman brothers, Dale (Pearce), Mal (Damien Richardson) and Shane (Edgerton), love to rob banks. Masters of the art of armed robbery, their only rule is: nobody gets hurt. Jailed on a previous conviction, the brothers have lucked upon a way to keep their criminal hands in while incarcerated. Working with their crooked lawyer, Frank (Taylor), who is in league with the equally corrupt prison governor and police chief, the brothers are spirited out of prison to commit bank raids before being returned behind bars with perfect alibis.
When permanent freedom is promised to the brothers, however, it comes at a price. The boys must pull off one final job ripping off the bookies' takings at the biggest horseracing event of the season, the Melbourne Gold Cup. But there are a couple of problems. Against the brothers' wishes, Frank has brought in a gang of trigger-happy thugs to assist in the job. Worse, Dale suspects that Frank has been having an affair with his wife, Carol (Griffiths). Together, they make for a volatile mix that threatens to explode at any time.
The Hard Word is a dynamic comedy-thriller that combines the light-hearted caper elements of The Italian Job with the gritty edginess of Reservoir Dogs. A witty script, inventive plot twists, explosive action and a superb central performance by Pearce make The Hard Word an unmissable crime caper.
