Favourably compared to the likes of The Godfather and Scarface, and regarded by many critics as the best British gangster movie of all time, The Long Good Friday has deservedly attained classic status since its original release 25 years ago.

Now, to celebrate this milestone film in British cinema history, Anchor Bay UK is releasing The Long Good Friday - 25th Anniversary Edition from 18th September 2006 on DVD. This three-disc set comes specially packaged in a steel slipcase, and includes an audio commentary by director John Mackenzie, a brand new "making of" featurette, plus the film's original soundtrack on CD.

Directed by John Mackenzie (The Fourth Protocol), The Long Good Fridaystars Oscar nominees Bob Hoskins (Mrs Henderson Presents) and Helen Mirren (Elizabeth I; Gosford Park), alongside Eddie Constantine (Alphaville), Paul Freeman (Raiders Of The Lost Ark), Derek Thompson (Casualty) and, in his first ever feature film, Pierce Brosnan (The Matador).

Set in early 1980s Britain, The Long Good Friday stars Hoskins as mobster Harold Shand, the all-powerful boss of the London's gangster underworld. Over the Easter Weekend on which he is about to close the ultimate deal with a high-ranking member of the American mafia - one that involves the lucrative development and regeneration of the capital's Docklands - Shand's empire suddenly, and literally, begins to explode around him.

First, one of his right-hand men is found murdered. Then, to add insult to injury, his Rolls Royce and its driver are obliterated by a car bomb. The final straw comes when an incendiary blast destroys his pub just seconds before he and his guests are about to enter it. For Harold Shand, there are two important questions: Who would dare attack Britain's most ruthless and respected gangster and why?

Hoskins delivers a ferocious, career-defining performance as the gang leader determined to enforce his rule and to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding the events of the long Good Friday.
