Synopsis |
|
It is twenty years on since Zorro last fought Don Rafael, who robbed him of his freedom, his child and his wife. Now Don Rafael has returned and Zorro must find a successor to wear the mask to defend the weak and avenge his wife's death. |

| Another big budget television-to-film remake, and unlike a host of flops before it, manages to combine the action, superbly choreographed fights, glamorous characters, and most importantly with these remakes, a story line, to give us an all engrossing two hours of explosive entertainment. |
| Don Diego de la Vega, Hopkins failing dismally to hide his Welsh accent, is the original Zorro who is now too old to take up the sword. He needs to find a younger replacement to thwart the plans of Don Rafael who has returned from exile with plans to buy the state of California and create an independent state. |
| Vega finds a replacement in a local bandit called Alejandro, played admirably Banderas who doesn't need to fake his Spanish accent. He teaches him the use of the blade and the necessary etiquette to infiltrate Rafael's gang in an attempt to reveal his plans. During a mission to steal a horse he meets his match when he comes by Rafael's daughter Elena. In one of the stand-out moments of the film you're treated to an fantastic fencing exhibition with unusual consequences! |
| It is the many fight scenes which makes this film as good as it is. Only when you watch the bonus documentary do you discover the painstaking efforts each member of the cast went through to learn the carefully choreographed fighting routines. It is worth the money alone to watch Catherine Zeta Jones, as she is simply stunning in all the costumes she wears. |
| The picture is outstanding, with the wonders of DVD bringing out all of the details on the superbly hand-crafted costumes. The sound is just as crisp with plenty of explosions and the sound of clashing blades ringing around the room. Yet again, Columbia produces another superb disc bursting with extras, but again, they feel the need to spoil the cover by blazing the 'fantastic special features' across it. Please stop doing this. |
