The Awakening

Directed by Nick Murphy and starring Rebecca Hall, Dominic West, Imelda Staunton, The Awakening, out to own on DVD, Double Play Blu-ray on 26th March 2012 from StudioCanal, is set in 1921, in a post-war England where many of the bereaved seek solace in spiritualism. Haunted by the death of her fiancé, Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall from The Town) is committed to debunking supernatural claims, using methodical and rational explanations. When she is asked to visit a boarding school in the countryside called Rookwood - to investigate the alleged sightings of a ghostly young boy - she feels compelled to take the job.

Once at Rookwood, she sets to work, laying traps and gathering scientific evidence. Gradually secrets begin to unravel and the mystery surrounding the ghost appears nothing more than a schoolboy prank. As Florence is set to leave, however, she experiences a chilling encounter that defies all reason. One of the schoolmasters, Robert Mallory (Dominic West from The Wire), worries about Florence's disposition in the aftermath. The incident leaves her scared and confused, but she is determined to get to the bottom of it and decides to stay on while the rest of the children go home for Christmas.

She is not alone, however, as three others stay on with her: Maud (Imelda Staunton from Vera Drake), the matron, whose initial request had brought Florence to the school; Tom (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), a young boy whose parents cannot care for him over the break; and Mallory, who, having recently fought in the Great War, is plagued by visions of the past.

Over the coming days the blurred image of a child-like ghost haunts Florence and she begins to doubt her resolve, increasingly unable to provide any logical explanation for the bizarre goings-on. As her bond with Mallory deepens, they are drawn to one another by their shared sense of loneliness and together they ready themselves to face their demons.

Written by legendary filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro and directed by comic book artist Troy Nixey, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, out to own on DVD, Double Play Blu-ray on 20th February 2012 from StudioCanal, is a remake of the 1973 ABC made-for-television horror film of the same name that starred Kim Darby.

Something ancient and evil is alive in the darkness beneath the Blackwood Mansion. When young Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison: Just Go With It) arrives in Rhode Island to visit her father Alex (Guy Pearce: Animal Kingdom) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes: Batman Begins) at the Victorian mansion they are restoring, she already feels like an outsider and her ornate new home seems a cold and unwanted prison.

Finding comfort and escape in her solitary exploration of the property, and despite the warnings of the caretaker Mr. Harris (Jack Thompson: The Good German), Sally embarks on an adventure that leads to the discovery of a hidden basement, undisturbed since the mysterious disappearance a century earlier of the mansion's builder, famed nature illustrator Emerson Blackwood. Once the private studio of Blackwood, the dark and dank underground chamber houses the secrets of the past of this unstable and unholy place, and perhaps something even more sinister.

Thompson which initiated his long, distinguished and brilliantly unpredictable career, The Rum Diary, released by Entertainment in Video on DVD & Blu-Ray on 5th March 2012, tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp).

Directed by David Mackenzie (Spread; Young Adam; Hallam Foe) from a script by award winning Danish writer Kim Fupz Aakeson (To Love Someone; Pure Hearts) the film co-stars Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting; Snatch; Julien Donkey-Boy), Denis Lawson (Star Wars; Marchlands) and Stephen Dillane (44 Inch Chest; The Hours).

A new virus is spreading throughout the globe, slowly stripping people of their five senses one at a time and beginning with the sense of smell. Deep feelings of grief, depression and rage briefly precede each sense loss, causing communities to spiral into chaos as the authorities struggle to cope with the situation. Witnessing these events are Michael (McGregor), the head chef at a swanky Glasgow restaurant and Susan (Green), an aloof epidemiologist who is conducting research into the outbreak. Following a chance encounter, Michael and Susan embark on an affair that sees them experiencing new and unforeseen depths of feeling and moments of pure emotional connection. But is their passion really based on love or is it that, with the world falling apart around them, they have nothing else to hold on to but each other?

A daring, inventive and contemporary sci-fi thriller, Perfect Sense is a "though-provoking and beautifully made" (Total Film, Four Star review) film "full of incidental detail and revealing insight, tugging at the heartstrings while examining the nature of humanity in the face of impending doom and disaster" SFX Magazine).

Directed by Tomas Alfredson and starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds and Benedict Cumberbatch, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is released on DVD and Blu-Ray on 30th January 2012 from StudioCanal.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy finds George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a recently retired MI6 agent, doing his best to adjust to a life outside the secret service. However, when a disgraced agent reappears with information concerning a mole at the heart of the service, Smiley is drawn back into the murky field of espionage. Tasked with investigating which of his trusted former colleagues has chosen to betray him and their country, Smiley narrows his search to four suspects - all experienced, skilled and successful agents - but past histories, rivalries and friendships make it far from easy to pinpoint the man who is eating away at the heart of the British establishment.

An acting masterclass from the crème de la crème of British film (Colin Firth - The King's Speech), Tom Hardy (Inception), Mark Strong (Kick Ass), Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and inspired direction from Let the Right One In's Tomas Alfredson make this gripping and tense adaptation of John le Carré's classic spy novel essential viewing.

Drive

Without question the coolest movie of 2011, Icon Home Entertainment is pleased to confirm the highly anticipated Blu-ray, DVD & Digital Download release of Drive on30th January 2012.

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson), Drive features one of the hottest young casts ever assembled, starring Academy Award Nominees Ryan Gosling (The Ides of March, Blue Valentine) and Carey Mulligan (An Education, Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps) alongside Golden Globe Winner Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy, Hellboy), Emmy Nominee Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Oscar Isaac (Body Of Lies) and Academy Award Nominee Albert Brooks (Taxi Driver, Broadcast News).

Since its worldwide premier at the Cannes International Film Festival in May 2011, where Winding Refn claimed the prestigious "Best Director" award, Drive has wowed audiences and critics alike, inciting a flurry of early Oscars-related buzz. Not since Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction has a film been made with such an assured sense of direction and knowing respect to its legacy of modern classic cinema.

Adapted from James Sallis' 2005 novel of the same name, Drive is the story of a Hollywood wheel-man for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for armed heists by night. Though a loner by nature, Driver (Ryan Gosling) can't help falling in love with his beautiful neighbour Irene (Carey Mulligan), a vulnerable young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. After a job spins unpredictably out of control and Driver finds himself as a target for some of LA's most dangerous men, the only way he can keep himself, Irene and her son alive is to do what he does best - Drive!

With a star-making turn from Ryan Gosling in the lead-role and many memorable performances from a phenomenal supporting cast, Drive delivers an original style and substance all of its own. Already being hailed as a modern masterpiece, to say its home entertainment release was highly-anticipated would be an understatement.

The Guard

Written and Directed by John Michael McDonagh and starring Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle and Mark Strong, The Guard, released on DVD and Blu-Ray on 16th January 2012 from StudioCanal, is a comedy-thriller set on the west coast of Ireland. Sergeant Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson: Into The Storm, In Bruges) is a small-town cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humour, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought FBI agent Wendell Everett (Don Cheadle: the Ocean films, Hotel Rwanda) to his door.

However, despite the fact that Boyle seems more interested in mocking and undermining Everett than in actively working to solve the case, Boyle finds that circumstances keep pulling him back into the thick of it. First his tiresomely enthusiastic new partner disappears, then his favourite hooker attempts to blackmail him into turning a blind eye and finally the drug-traffickers themselves try to buy him off as they have every other member of the local police force.

These events unwittingly often Boyle's murky moral code. He realises that he needs to take matters into his own hands and the only person he can trust is Everett. And so the scene is set for an explosive finale.

The Guard is the most successful independent Irish film of all time in terms of box-office receipts, overtaking The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2006) that previously held this status. The Guard also won Best Debut Film at the Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival.

The Slap

Based on Christos Tsiolkas' multi-award winning and best-selling novel and as seen on BBC4, Revolver Entertainment is pleased to announce the 3-Disc DVD Box Set release of eight-part Australian television drama, The Slap on 9th January 2012.

Currently airing on BBC Four, The Slap has transfixed audiences across the UK and become a major household talking point, with its controversial and headline-grabbing storyline. The Slap is a bold and provocative portrait of middle-class Australian life as it traces the shattering repercussions a single event has on a group of family and friends.

The series starts at a suburban backyard barbeque, as a tight-knit group of long-standing friends attend a 40th birthday party; the food and wine flows and the guests enjoy a long, lazy lunch. Amongst the alcohol, camaraderie and a children's cricket game, a man slaps a child who is not his son...

Starring Melissa George (Grey's Anatomy, 30 Days of Night, Triangle), Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda), Jonathan La Paglia (Cold Case); Essie Davis (Australia) and Alex Dimitriades (Neighbours), the story unfolds through the eyes of the eight main characters as a court case proceeds, affairs begin and end, a pregnancy is decided and as marriages morph and change - each character's life is profoundly affected by "the slap".

The Slap explores what happens when the veil of civility that binds us as a society, is ripped apart by one disturbing action. It brings to life and raises vivid questions of parenting, the rights of children, race, class, sexuality and the different perspectives between men and women.

Christos Tsiolkas' novel was hugely controversial upon release but none-the-less sold in huge numbers and garnered much acclaim, particularly in the UK. The Slap was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Writer's Prize in 2009 and was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2010. Says Tsiolkas of The Slap's on-screen adaptation; "The experience of suddenly seeing these fictional characters from my imagination, in flesh and blood, was truly humbling and awe-inspiring. It felt like the perfect cast".

The 3-Disc DVD Box Set of The Slap will include the series' eight, 51 minute episodes, alongside never-before-seen and exclusive bonus features. Bonus features include; cast and crew interviews, an extensive making-of documentary and deleted scenes.

The Devil's Double

Based on the action-packed, unbelievable true story of money, power and opulent decadence, Icon Home Entertainment brings The Devil's Double to Blu-ray Disc and DVD on 26th December 2011. This white-knuckle trip deep into the lawless playground of excess and violence is highlighted by a star-making turn from Dominic Cooper (Captain America: The First Avenger) in an unforgettable dual performance as Saddam Hussein's sadistic party-boy son, the "Black Prince" Uday, as well as army lieutenant Latif Yahia, the man thrust into the highest echelons of the "royal family" when he's ordered to become Uday's body double.

With his and his family's lives at stake, Latif must surrender his former self forever as he learns to walk, talk and act like Uday.
Straw Dogs

Coinciding with its 40th anniversary and with the forthcoming theatrical release (on 4th November 2011) of the remake directed by Rod Lurie and starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgard and James Woods, director Sam Peckinpah's notorious thriller Straw Dogs has been carefully restored and remastered for release on two-disc DVD and for the first time ever as a features-packed Special Edition Blu-ray on 24th October 2011 from Fremantle Home Entertainment.

Based on Gordon M. Williams's novel The Siege Of Trencher's Farm and starring Dustin Hoffman and Susan George, Straw Dogs marked Peckinpah's first directorial step outside the Western genre and into a contemporary (and uniquely British) setting. The result is an unflinching and uncompromising study of primal, barbaric brutality that is generally regarded as one of the strongest statements about violence ever put on screen.

Quiet American mathematician David Sumner (Dustin Hoffman) and his British-born wife Amy (Susan George) relocate to Amy's rural English hometown in an attempt to flee the violent social unrest brewing in the US. When David hires some locals, including a former boyfriend of Amy's, to repair his barn, the couple find themselves being subtly harassed and bullied by the workmen. The more the pacifist David ignores the problem, the more the harassment intensifies, leading to terrifying consequences as he ultimately finds himself forced to defend his home and his life, discovering a frighteningly vicious side to himself as events escalate towards a bloody climax.

Boasting outstanding performances from the two leads (particularly Hoffman), a brilliant support cast and Jerry Fielding's superb Oscar-nominated score, Straw Dogs, in the 40 years since its original release, has lost none of its intense, visceral power to thrill and shock in equal measure.
From the producers of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs The World, Attack The Block, released on DVD and Blu-Ray from Optimum Home Entertainment on 19th September 2011, is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It's inner city versus outer space.

On Guy Fawkes Night in a council estate in South London trainee nurse Sam (Jodie Whittaker) is walking home to her tower block when she's robbed by a gang of masked, hooded teens. With their victim taking her chance to flee, they investigate and find it's a meteor from outer space and it's brought along something for the ride.

Attacked by a small alien creature that emerges, the gang manage to fend it off and kill it, dragging it's carcass back to their 'block', which they treat as their territory. While Sam and the police hunt for the gang.

Digitally restored and released on DVD and Blu-ray on 5th September 2011 from Optimum Home Entertainment, perhaps the most perfect of all the Golden-Age Ealing comedies, which is also included on the British Film Institute's list of the 100 Best British Films of the 20th Century, Kind Hearts and Coronets famously featured Alec Guinness in eight different roles as the unsuspecting members of the aristocratic D'Ascoyne family - bumped off one by one by the scheming, outcast cousin of the family: Louis Mazzini.

Mazzini's mother was a D'Ascoyne by birth, but she ran away with an opera singer and was ostracized by her family as a result. When her dying wish to be buried in the family crypt is refused, Louis vows to get his revenge. As he ascends the social ranks, he is torn between his love for now-married childhood sweetheart and equally devilish Sibella (Joan Greenwood) and the saintly wife of one of his victims, Edith D'Ascoyne (Valerie Hobson).

Dennis Price's stunning performance as the ambitious Louis has always been somewhat overshadowed by Guinness, so sit back and admire anew the coolly detached relish with which he dispatches the eight relatives standing between himself, the Dukedom and revenge. The film featured stunning and inventive cinematography by Douglas Slocombe and a groundbreaking first-person narrative that, legend has it, inspired Scorsese to make use of the same device in Goodfellas.

2010 saw the return to UK cinema screens of three iconic titles, following extensive digital restoration: The Railway Children, Breathless and Peeping Tom. They have also committed to restoring the following classics from the UK catalogue for potential cinema and blu-ray release in 2011: Don't Look Now, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Ice Cold in Alex, The Cruel Sea, Whiskey Galore!, The Lavender Hill Mob, Quatermass & The Pit and Kind Hearts & Coronets. These releases herald an increased commitment from Optimum to preserving and restoring the vast library of classic titles that they manage on behalf of Studio Canal at a new state-of-the-art cold storage facility at Pinewood studios.

Kind Hearts and Coronets was scanned in 2K definition on a Northlight 2 Film Scanner from the original 35mm negative elements and restored in High Definition. The picture was restored using Film Master D.V.O restoration tools and PFClean software systems, removing dirt, scratches, warps, torn or replacing torn or missing frames and improving stability issues. The sound was also improved, with instances of pops, clicks, hiss and distortion minimised or removed.

Special Features

Audio Commentary with Peter Bradshaw, Terence Davies & Matthew Guinness

John Landis Introduction

Dennis Price: Those British Faces

BBC Radio 3 Essay

Alternative American Ending

Restoration Comparison

Behind the Scenes

Stills Gallery

Excerpt from BECTU Interview with Douglas Slocombe

Trailer

The cult classic returns with stunning picture quality and crystal clear sound as The Big Lebowski is released on Blu-ray from 22nd August 2011 from Universal Pictures. This special Blu-ray release of The Big Lebowski even comes in a unique hard backed digibook with a 24 page colour booklet, so you can spend even more time with The Dude.

The Coen Brothers' creation - 'The Dude' has inspired a cult following. We're not sure if it's his unique fashion, taste in drinks or laid back attitude, but The Dude emanates a relaxed charm which has seduced film buffs, geeks and men in general for almost 15 years. So recline as far as your sofa will allow and watch The Dude's adventure take flight with picture and audio quality that only Blu-ray will allow.

Oscar winner Jeff Bridges (TRON: Legacy) stars as Jeffrey Lebowski, AKA - The Dude, the ultimate LA slacker with room for only a few things in his life; bowling, white russians and marijuana. When The Dude is mistaken for Jeffrey Lebowski, the ultimate LA millionaire, he becomes involved in a kidnapping and ransom of which he knows nothing about. A sequence of events unfolds in which thugs pee on The Dude's favourite rug (not just any rug, a rug which ties the room together), a briefcase full of dirty underwear is thrown from The Dude's car and a severed toe with green nail polish turns up in the mail.

Starring much younger versions of John Goodman (O Brother, Where Art Thou) as Walter, Steve Buscemi (Monsters, Inc.) as Donny and Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) as Maude Lebowski, the film has achieved cult status over the years as it has been noted for its idiosyncharatic characters, dream sequences, unconventional dialogue and that famous soundtrack.

More than just a cult film, The Big Lebowski has inspired a cult way of life and a devoted following of similarly laid back folk. The annual Lebowski Fest began in Kentucky, USA before expanding to several other cities including London where it is known as The Dude Abides Fest. Also, an online religion called 'Dudism', devoted to spreading the philosophy and lifestyle of The Dude has now ordained 50,000 'Dudeist Priests' all over the world.

Kick back with a white russian, put your feet up and catch up with The Dude - taking it easy for all us sinners - when The Big Lebowski is released on Blu-ray from 22nd August 2011.

Blu-Ray Special Features

The Dude's Life

The Dude Abides: The Big Lebowski Ten Years Later

Flying Carpets and Bowling Pin Dreams: The Dream Sequences of The Dude

Interactive Map

Jeff Bridges Photo Book

Exclusive Introduction

Making of The Big Lebowski

The Lebowski Fest: An Achiever's Story

Photo Gallery

Scene Companion PIP

U-Control: The Music of The Big Lebowski

Mark It, Dude PIP

Inside Nature's Giants

Delve under the skin of nature's most magnificent beasts when Inside Nature's Giants is released on DVD on 22nd August 2011 from 4DVD. Presented by eminent veterinary scientist Mark Evans, Inside Nature's Giants involves never-seen-before dissection and uncovers the anatomical secrets of the animal kingdom's most extraordinary species!

In this DVD, experts in comparative anatomy, evolution and behavior put some of the most popular and enigmatic large animals under the knife: an elephant, crocodile, whale and giraffe. While Evans interprets their finding, biologist Simon Watts tests the animals' physiology in the field and Professor Richard Dawkins traces back the animals' place on the tree of life to paint a fascinating picture of these incredible animals.

What makes this documentary stand out from other wildlife shows is that rather than demonstrating how animals behave, it uses dissection and wildlife photography to show how millions of years of evolution have enabled these species to thrive in their environments. Inside Nature's Giants answers the age-old questions: How did the elephant get its trunk? Why are giraffe's necks so long? And how did whales evolve from land mammals?

The new release uncovers some astonishing facts about these unique creatures including that the giraffe has the highest blood pressures of all animals, an elephant's trunk is the most versatile limb on the planet, crocodiles have the strongest bite in the animal kingdom (but it's teeth are hopeless for chewing!) and a whale's closest living relative is a hippo! Inside Nature's Giants is natural history as you've never seen it before - from the inside out!

Following its hugely successful theatrical release that saw it earning Five Star reviews in Empire ("a sci-fi picture which never loses sight of the human factor an amazing achievement"), Total Film ("the most audacious debut since The Blair Witch Project"), the Financial Times ("a lollapalooza... so edgy it hardly needs monsters... a masterpiece of high-amp anxiety"), the Daily Express ("an intelligent, inventive film. highly recommended") and the Sunday Mirror ("a road trip blending romance with sci-fi thrills"), the critically acclaimed Monsters comes to DVD and Blu-ray on 11th April 2011 courtesy of Vertigo Films.

The winner of the Best Director, Best Achievement in Production and Best Technical Achievement awards at the 2010 British Independent Film Awards and recently nominated for the BAFTA award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, Monsters was written, shot and directed by Emmy nominated and BAFTA award winning CGI animator Gareth Edwards (Perfect Disasters; Hiroshima), who, for his debut feature, "wanted to make a love story that didn't make him cringe, as well as a sci-fi movie where the premise wasn't totally unbelievable." To say that Edwards more than achieved his goal with Monsters would be something of an understatement.

Described as "a hugely impressive disaster-come-road movie that conveys almost Spielbergian promise" by the Sunday Express and "a horror film that has plenty of heart" by the Sunday Times, Monsters is a beautifully shot and totally absorbing movie boasting extraordinarily strong performances by its two leads, real-life couple Scoot McNairy (In Search Of A Midnight Kiss) and Whitney Able (All The Boys Love Mandy Lane), and featuring incredible visuals and special effects that belie its modest budget.

Synopsis

Soon after a NASA probe sent to collect samples from Jupiter's moon, Europa, crash-landed in Central America, strange new life forms began to appear in the area forcing half of Mexico to be quarantined as an infected zone. Six years later, US and Mexican military forces are struggling to contain the fully-grown alien creatures and to control their seasonal migration within the zone.

In the midst of the chaos caused by the creatures' unusually early migration is photojournalist Andrew Kaulder (McNairy), who is hoping to get at least one 'money shot' of them in action. But when his publisher boss' vacationing daughter Sam (Able) is found to be stranded in the area, Kaulder is charged with guaranteeing her secure passage through Mexico to the safety of the US border.

"A post-modern sci-fi... with a hugely involving love story" (The Guardian), the genre-busting Monsters is a "seriously impressive" (Mail on Sunday) and "remarkable piece of work" (The Observer) that will appeal as much to lovers of cool, indie relationship dramas as it will to fans of mainstream horror and sci-fi cinema.

Special Features

Audio commentary by Gareth Edwards, Scoot McNairy and Whitney Able

Behind the Scenes featurette

Editing Monsters featurette

Monsters VFX featurette

Factory Farmed - short film by Gareth Edwards

Let Me In

Icon Home Entertainment asks: Let Me In with the DVD and Blu-ray release of the haunting and provocative thriller on 14th March 2011, a critically acclaimed masterpiece that sets a new standard for Vampire movies.

Starring Chloe Moretz (Hit Girl in Kick-Ass) as Abby, Academy Award® nominee Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) as The Father, Kodi Smit-Mcphee (The Road) as Owen and written and directed by the celebrated Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), Let Me In is based on the best-selling Swedish novel Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let The Right One In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist. It has been universally lauded by critics and fully cements Moretz's position as the most exciting young actress of recent years.

Abby (Moretz) is a mysterious twelve year old who moves next door to Owen (Smit-Mcphee), a social outcast who is viciously bullied at school. In his loneliness, Owen forms a profound bond with his new neighbour, but he can't help noticing that Abby is like no-one he has ever met before. As a string of grisly murders grips his wintry New Mexico town, Owen has to confront the reality that this seemingly innocent girl is actually a savage vampire.

Let Me In marks the return of legendary British horror brand Hammer Films and is the first movie from the studio in over 30 years. The film is scored by Academy Award®, Emmy® and Grammy® winning composer Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost) and compliments this very different kind of vampire movie.

A poignant coming-of-age story as well as bone-chilling horror, it is also a haunting mediation on the difficult and often painful transition into adolescence. Evocative and gory yet touching, Let Me In is a modern classic and both the Blu-ray and DVD will be accompanied by a spellbinding array of special features.

Making its home entertainment debut on Disney DVD and Double Play on 6th December 2010, this family quest brings together the inexorable talents of Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina and Jay Baruchel in stunning high definition, destined to become a firm favourite with all ages this Christmas.
