Mike Leigh cast his regular British collaborators Jim Broadbent (Vera Drake, Topsy-Turvey, Any Human Heart), Lesley Manville (All or Nothing, Secrets and Lies), Ruth Sheen (Secrets and Lies, High Hopes, Vanity Fair) and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake, Cranford) as well as Peter Wight (Vera Drake, Hot Fuzz, Lark Rise to Candleford), Oliver Maltman (Happy-Go-Lucky) and Martin Savage (Extras, Family Guy).
