Brad (Vince Vaughn) and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) are a happy upscale San Francisco couple who tell their respective families that they can't see them over Christmas as they're busy doing charity work. It is a December 25 tradition they have shared every year since they met - ditching their crazy families for a relaxing, fun-filled holiday in a sun-soaked exotic location.
Once there, they sip margaritas by the pool and toast the festive season, knowing they have once again avoided the chaos and emotional fallout of their divorced parents, squabbling siblings and out-of-control kids. All the simmering resentments and awkward moments that are the hallmarks of every family Christmas are a long way away!
However, this year Kate and Brad are in for a shock. With shorts and sunglasses packed, they head off for the airport only to discover when they get there that its shrouded in a huge fogbank and all outbound flights have been cancelled. Worse still, they are caught on camera by a local news crew, revealing their whereabouts to the whole city... and, more importantly, to their families.
So much for their charity work ruse! With no escape and no excuses, they are now expected back home to join in the Christmas festivities with Brad's father ... and Kate's mother ... and Brad's mother ... and Kate's father. Four post-divorce parents equals four Christmases in one day!
As they brace themselves for a marathon homecoming, Brad and Kate fear the worst - and that's exactly what they get - but as Brad counts down the minutes to their nightmare day ending, Kate surprisingly finds herself tuned to the ticking of a different clock.
At the end of the day, they will both gain a new perspective on where they came from... and where they're going and as an unmarried, childless couple they start to wonder whether their only chance of finding genuine happiness is to tune in to the 'family' way of life.
