May 1940 saw the biggest evacuation in military history, with in excess of 330,000 allied troops rescued from Dunkirk with the help of British civilians working side by side with the armed forces in an amazing show of compassion and solidarity. Now this true, awe-inspiring story is told in the outstanding BAFTA winning BBC docudrama Dunkirk, which arrives on DVD courtesy of Arrow Films.
Narrated by Timothy Dalton (Licence to Kill) and starring a stellar all-star cast including Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Simon Russell Beale (Penny Dreadful), Michael Legge (Shameless), Phil Cornwell (Jericho), Kevin McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Richard Attlee (My Week With Marilyn), as his grandfather Clement Attlee, this fascinating film portrays real characters based on firsthand accounts of the event.
Originally airing on BBC Two, Dunkirk was the result of extensive research which unearthed previously untold personal accounts of what really happened. This eye-opening three-hour factual production will be available for its first solo release on DVD on 10th July 2017.
Told from the perspective of the decision makers and the soldiers, sailors and civilians caught up in the events of those desperate days, Dunkirk follows the race against time to save the Allied armies trapped in France.
As British and French troops were forced into a shrinking pocket by the relentless onslaught of the German army, the Royal and Merchant navies, helped by a fleet of small civilian craft, launched a momentous effort to rescue them - and miraculously managed to save more than 338,000 men in just ten days.
