When Trumpets Fade

Released on DVD (£12.99) by Arrow Films on 24th September 2007, from director John Irvin (Hamburger Hill; The Dogs Of War) comes When Trumpets Fade, ‘an intimate and powerful study of the horrors of battle' (Radio Times) that does for the World War II what Irvin's acclaimed 1987 war movie ‘Hamburger Hill' did for the conflict in Vietnam.

Boasting an impressive, all-star ensemble cast that includes Martin Donovan (Wind Chill), Timothy Olyphant (Die Hard 4), Ron Eldard (Black Hawk Down; E.R.), Frank Whaley (World Trade Center), Dylan Bruno (Saving Private Ryan), Devon Gummersall (My So-Called Life), Dwight Yoakam (Wedding Crashers) and Bobby Cannavale (Snakes On A Plane), When Trumpets Fade is set amid the carnage and slaughter of the Hurtgen Forest battle when the Allies moved on toward Germany in the autumn of 1944.

The sole survivor of a week-long attack on his platoon, Private Manning (Ron Eldard) is hoping for a Section 8 discharge away from the frontlines on the grounds of his mental unfitness for battle. But, impressed by what he perceives to be Manning's bravery and survival instincts, Captain Pritchett (Martin Donovan) decides to promote him to sergeant and puts him in charge of a deadly Scouting mission into enemy territory.

The move irritates Sergeant Talbot (Dylan Bruno), who believes Manning's survival has more to do with cowardice than heroism and an uneasy tension soon develops between the two men. Meanwhile, following the success of the scouting mission, Manning has now been given the task of leading a group of awkward and inexperienced recruits in an assault on a key location - a heavily defended bridge held by the Germans.

Gripping and effective, Irvin's graphically violent and horrifyingly realistic portrayal of the devastating effects of military combat on the men involved When Trumpets Fade a notch above the usual war is hell-themed examples of the war movie genre.
