Set against the backdrop of political turmoil caused by the Spanish Inquisition and the invasion of Spain by Napoleon's army, the film captures the essence and beauty of Goya's work - known for both the colourful portrayals of the Spanish Royal court and the grim depictions of the brutality of war and life in 18th century Spain. Alongside Portman, Goya’s Ghosts boasts an impressive ensemble cast that features Javier Bardem (The Sea Inside, Collateral), Stellan Skarsgard (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy) and Randy Quaid (Brokeback Mountain). In Spain, 1792, the Catholic Church is at the height of its powers. The revolution has sent neighbouring France into turmoil and the Spanish church decides to restore order by bringing back the dreaded Inquisition. Spearheading this movement is the enigmatic and cunning priest Lorenzo (Bardem), a man who seeks power above all. Lorenzo's friend is Francisco Goya (Skarsgard), Spain's most famous artist and portraitist to kings and queens. When his beautiful model Ines (Portman) is unjustly imprisoned and tortured by the Inquisition, their friendship is put to the ultimate test as Goya begs Lorenzo to spare the poor girl….
