" An impressive cast at the top of their game, plus a killer twist that’s anything but a flashy gimmick" – Total Film
Gavin Hood, whose film ‘Tsotsi’ became the first film from South Africa to win an Academy Award®, makes his US motion picture debut with this provocative look at the complex political issues surrounding the US government’s policy of "extraordinary rendition" - abducting foreign nationals deemed a threat to national security for detention and interrogation in secret overseas prisons. Along with its three brilliant leads, Rendition also boasts an impressive supporting cast including Alan Arkin, who recently won an Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Little Miss Sunshine, and Peter Sarsgaard whose numerous screen credits include Jarhead and Flightplan. Spanning two continents, Rendition tracks the lives of Douglas Freeman (Gyllenhaal), a CIA analyst based in North Africa, who is forced to question his assignment after he witnesses the brutal and unorthodox interrogation by secret North African police of Anwar El-Ibrahimi (Omar Metwally), an Egyptian-American chemical engineer whose family emigrated to the States when he was a boy, and who is now suspected of a terrorist act. Meanwhile, Anwar’s pregnant wife Isabella (Witherspoon), does everything in her power to find her missing husband, who has seemingly disappeared during a flight from Cape Town to Washington, DC. Her quest for the truth ultimately leads Isabella, Freeman and the CIA’s head of terrorism (Streep) into an international web of deceit, conspiracies and top secret truths far more frightening than the lies that conceal them.
