Vincent (Hawke) is an 'In-Valid', a natural born human in a world ruled by a genetic elite forged in test tubes. Determined to be assimilated into a society that condemns him as an outcast, he meets Jerome (Law), a 'Valid' willing to sell his prime genetic material.

Having assumed Jerome's identity, Vincent pursues his goal of a mission to space with the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation and enjoys a blossoming romance with the beautiful Irene (Thurman), another Valid. His dreams begin to unravel, however, when he is implicated in a brutal murder.
