The Morecambe & Wise Show

Loved by the public and critics alike, national treasures Morecambe and Wise were a staple ingredient of the nation’s television diet for four decades. Unseen for many years and available for the first time on DVD from Network on 24th March 2008, The Morecambe & Wise Show – The Thames Years Series The Complete First Series comprises of not only their first series for Thames Television in 1980 but also their first four Thames Specials - including three of their wonderful Christmas Shows complete and uncut. This two-disc set will retail for £19.99.

Dreadful puns, botched song and dance routines, short, fat, hairy legs and a little bit of magic are brought together into hilarious entertainment by the nation's favourite double act with the help of showbiz greats including Terry Wogan, Hannah Gordon, Hugh Paddick, Dave Prowse, Deryck Guyler, Suzanne Danielle, Gemma Craven, David Frost, Glenda Jackson, Donald Sinden, Judi Dench, Leonard Rossiter and Alec Guinness. All these shows were originally broadcast on ITV in 1980.

The powerful combination of great script writing from the likes of Eddie Braben, John Junkin and Barry Cryer plus the comic timing of Eric and Ernie ensure that The Morecambe & Wise Show requires repeated viewing and is a must-have comedy DVD for every collection as well as fans of TV’s golden age. It’s no wonder that they were voted Number Two in a 2006 poll of The Greatest TV Stars and to may remain the nation’s greatest entertainers.

Disc 1: Series One

  • Show 1: 3 September 1980 Ernie invites Terry Wogan round to the flat to persuade him to make a pop record with Eric and himself. Success is guaranteed because Terry can play the record every morning on his radio programme Terry reluctantly agrees to sing the song which Ernie describes as really "with it" although it doesn’t turn out like that...
  • Show 2: 10 September 1980 From the comparative calm of playing a bank manager’s wife, lovely Hannah Gordon is pitchforked into the chaos created by Eric and Ernie. After all, she did not really expect to sing a song with them. Later, Ernie discovers that a fellow writer is living in the same block of flats. Hugh Paddick plays this eccentric poet, and when he enters the flat his high-flown language and artistic clothes leave him wide open to Eric’s gags.
  • Show 3: 17 September 1980 Ernie decides that Eric is getting far too cheeky, so he phones "Rent-a-Giant" and hires a rather big chap called Cosmo to help with the discipline. Later Ernie takes his partner to a Chinese restaurant - it’s all very difficult, because the tall one with the glasses much prefers sausage, egg and chips.
  • Show 4: 24 September 1980 Eric takes over Eamonn Andrews’ role and tells 'em "This is Your Life". Later in the flat Ern, whilst reading "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte, comments "I wonder why all us famous writers come from the same part of the world". Eric, not to be outdone, replies that his home town has produced its share of all time greats - most notably Ossie Stringer, the Morecambe & District Spoon & Washboard Champion.
  • Show 5: 1 October 1980 Ernie tells Eric that he’s expecting a visit from a fellow writer who is coming round to the flat "for advice on how to become a great playwright like what I am". He doesn’t want Eric hanging about - but finds it impossible to get rid of him. The fellow writer turns out to be a bit of a surprise, and Eric gets Ern into even more trouble than usual.
  • Show 6: 8 October 1980 Many people will have seen the musical production number in the film "In The Rain" danced by Gene Kelly and partner Cyd Charisse in which the chiffon train of her dress billowed behind her in the breeze. But up to now nobody will have seen the same item danced by Ernie Wise and Gemma Craven - with a little interference from Eric Morecambe. Versatile Gemma is also in the flat sketch playing the part of a French au pair girl.

Disc 2: Special Features

  • First Thames Special: 18 October 1978 Eric and Ernie’s first-ever show for Thames features Donald Sinden, Judi Dench, Leonard Sachs and Peter Cushing, with help from Barry Cryer and John Junkin who also wrote the script with additional material from Eric and Ernie.
  • Christmas Special 1978: 25 December 1978 The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show has many facets, various aspects, several points of view and partridge in a pear tree. Viewers will see Eric and Ernie as they have never seen them before - Ernie will sing Wagner’s "Ring" in its entirety and Eric will give his impression of the last turkey in the shop.
  • Christmas Special 1979: 25 December 1979 Christmas would not be the same without Eric and Ernie and in this show they meet David Frost to talk - and laugh - about the past, present and future. Their guest is Glenda Jackson and the music is supplied as usual by The Peter Knight Orchestra.
  • Christmas Special 1980: 25 December 1980 Eric and Ernie have persuaded Alec Guinness to appear in their show - he doesn’t know what he’s in for! Also, the world premier of Ernie Wise’s rewritten version of Shakespeare’s "Hamlet" - an improvement, of course. With Peter Barkworth, another newcomer, playing Hamlet, Hannah Gordon as Ophelia, Ernie plays Claudius, the King, and Eric a none-too-convincing ghost.
