The
third teaming of director Wilson Yip and action director, fight
choreographer and star Donnie Yen (following their previous collaborations
on Dragon Tiger Gate and S.P.L.), Flashpoint, released on DVD
(£16.99) by Showbox Home Entertainment/Cine Asia on 31st
March 2008, brings the thrill of 'back to basics' realism and full
contact combat to the martial arts genre with Yen fully exploiting his
recently developed interest in Mixed Martial Arts, the fighting style
pioneered by the late, great Bruce Lee.
Presented as a Special Collector's Double Disc Edition, Flashpoint now comes to DVD packed with over an hour-and-a-half of bonus features, including an exclusive extended interview with Donnie Yen. Yen stars as maverick Detective Jun Ma, a violent Hong Kong cop with a reputation not only for breaking every rule in the book when bringing criminals to justice but also for breaking several of their bones in the process. Ma's unorthodox methods and a tidal turn in Hong Kong's criminal underworld have put him under increasing pressure. The city is gradually being taken over by a new Triad gang led by a trio of vicious, drug-smuggling brothers from Vietnam, and Ma has begun to lose the respect of his officers after having been demoted for beating up a suspect. With the help of a rookie undercover cop, Wilson (Louis Koo), who has infiltrated the gang, Ma manages to apprehend one of the three criminal brothers, but his reckless indecision over withdrawing his officer from the line of fire leads to Wilson's cover being blown. As the rest of the Triad gang escape from the carefully planned sting, Wilson is seriously injured. Pushed to the edge by this culmination of events, Ma embarks on a path of revenge that he is determined to continue until all the brothers are brought down, dead or alive. Packed from the start with nail-biting tension, full-on contact Mixed Martial Arts fight sequences and plenty of cool John Woo-style gunplay, Flashpoint builds to a breathtaking 20-minute hand-to-hand combat set piece involving Donnie Yen and Collin Chou (The Matrix Revolutions; The Matrix Reloaded; Jet Li's Fearless) that will knock viewers out of their seats.
