Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), the controversial cult horror movie about a cross-dressing, chainsaw-wielding serial killer and his sordid inbred cannibal family the Sawyers, will be available to own as a special edition DVD through Universal Pictures Video from 10th March 2003 with a range of unique additional features.

This Special Edition version of the cult horror classic marries brand new footage with the highly authoritative 72-minute documentary on TCM titled The Shocking Truth, which is the most definitive exploration of TCM to date. To accompany this fascinating documentary, director and cast interviews are included on the DVD, along with a 16-page collectors booklet and a free US original theatrical poster. Presented in premium packaging, this is the most comprehensive TCM offering ever made available to the UK public.

TCM was deemed unsuitable for the British masses by James Ferman of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), the head of the UK film censor body for twenty-five years until 1999. Ferman subsequently banned any other feature from having the words 'chain saw' as part of its title. This classic horror film is the godfather of the 'Slasher' movie genre, influencing films such as Halloween and Friday 13th, as well as being parodied in several spoof movies including Texas Chain Saw Manicure.

Directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist), TCM was produced on a meagre eighty-two thousand dollar budget. Inspired by 1950s serial killer Ed Gein, the plot centres on five young Texans who break down in their camper van and encounter the Sawyers, who kill passers-by and use their flesh for special recipe Texan B-B-Q style food. The five teenagers are Sally (Marilyn Burns), her wheelchair-bound brother Franklin (Paul A Partain) and their friends Jerry (Allen Dazinger), Kirk (William Vail) and Pam (Teri McMinn).

The key protagonists of TCM are cross-dressing chainsaw killer Leatherface, played by Gunnar Hansen and Sally Hardesty, who plays Marilyn Burns. Hansen's demented Leatherface squeals like a pig and he makes masks from the skin of human victims. Burns joined the illustrious company of 'Scream Queens' beginning with Faye Wray in King Kong.

The appeal of TCM lies in its cinema veritè style, which makes it look like a documentary, adding a gritty realism to the film. Together with the horror of anticipation and suggestion, rather than graphic depictions of blood (the film is surprisingly bloodless), TCM scared audiences worldwide.

How to Spot a Psychotic Maniac

  • He claims that he still lives with his mother, even though she's been dead for 20 years.
  • He snuggles up in bed at night with an axe, a loaded gun and a copy of 'Gun Lovers' monthly.
  • He takes a game of 'murder in the dark' to bloody extremes.
  • He has a pet name for all the chain saws in his impressive collection - his favourite one is called 'bloody mayhem'.
  • He relaxes by listening to music. His favourite album is 'Buzz Saw's Greatest Hits - Tunes That Hum'.
  • On your first, and let's face it, probably last date, he talks incessantly about his mother and how she wouldn't like it if she knew he was out with you.
  • He's forever telling you what beautiful skin you have.
  • He's 45, single, doesn't date women, or men for that matter, and spends his spare time collecting butterflies, pulling the wings of flies and badger baiting.
  • His favourite hobby is taxidermy and you suspect it's the only stuffing he's ever had.
  • He tries to impress you by cooking a meal but everything he makes tastes like chicken.
  • He encourages you to put on weight because you need 'fattening up'.
  • He chats you up by asking you if you want to see some puppies - that he's just had stuffed.
  • He wears some quite gruesome looking masks that he claims to have sewn together himself from a 'special' fabric.
  • He likes dressing up in women's clothes - old women's clothes.
  • He has an unhealthy obsession with his mother.
  • He believes that all women are harlots - apart from his mother.
  • He's a bit of a loner, has no friends and his family have all mysteriously disappeared.
  • His home décor is truly bizarre; his furniture is made out of a type of wood you've never seen before. In fact, it looks almost like bone…
  • He's not much of a talker, in fact he just squeals like a pig when he wants to communicate.
  • He wanders around the woods late at night carrying an axe. Yet he's not a lumberjack and does not have a wood-burning stove.
  • His house has a strange musty smell, like a graveyard.
  • He's forever hanging around by the side of the road trying to hitch a lift - but he only lives a short walk away…
  • His personal ad claims that he is 'Single, male, 45, likes walking in the rain, cooking, outdoor pursuits and prefers the larger lady'.
  • He lives in a crooked house on the top of hill miles and miles from civilisation.
  • His ideal job would be working in an abattoir - just like the one his dad used to own.
  • He collects road kill and then plays with it in his garden shed, late at night.
