Synopsis

Its 200 years since Ellen Ripley died on Fiorina 161. Scientists have now taken her DNA and cloned her, including the alien which was living inside her.

Film

As is the usual case with the military, United Systems Military have taken up the task of breeding and harnessing the deadly aliens by cloning Ripley. Unfortunately for the scientists they severely underestimated the alien menace held in captivity and it doesn't take long for them to plot and execute a clever escape. It's now up to cloned Ripley and a gang of smugglers to set the ship to self destruct and get off before it blows, hopefully killing the aliens before they reach earth.

The film follows the aforementioned Ripley and tag-along smugglers chasing though the ship to escape. There are a few interesting surprises on the way, including finding out that Call is in fact an artificial life form a'la Bishop and Ash in the previous films. Unfortunately, Winona Ryder is a little out of place in this roll, being a bit on the petit side.

Resurrection was generally slated across the board when it was released, but I actually quite like it. It's certainly an improvement on the dire Alien 3 which in my opinion was the worst of the bunch by a mile. Certainly you get a good sense of scale when you see the size of the ships in this, if you don't believe me take a look in the gallery by selecting the button above.

Picture quality is pretty good, if a little soft, but in general its not a bad anamorphic transfer with a reasonable amount of colour detail. Some of the CGI effects are a little obvious, the Aliens swimming through the water springs to mind here, but they aren't all bad.

Sound quality is very good, with some nice clear effects in the rear channels adding to the tense and claustrophobic scenes. Its all rounded off with some good booming bass effects and clear dialogue in the centre channel.

Extras are severely lacking and stink of a quick money making release with a very short featurette and standard trailer. The animated menu is clever with small drops of water running down metal and an animated alien in a jar.

All in all, not the worst of the four films, but not the best either. Generally only to be bought as part of the box-set unless you like Winona Ryder, and even then you're pushing it.
